10/19/2013 Q and A With Dr. Rama: Should We or Should We Not be Vegetarian?

Questions and Answers with Dr. Rama---issues and perspectives in Health, Healing, Spirituality and Medicine.

Dr Rama:  Is it necessary to be 100 percent vegetarian for optimal health, healing, Spirituality and Medicine?

Dr. Rama:  Well, in my view that is up to the individual within their journey, their needs and relationship to themselves and a higher Power of any kind.  We can never say this or that is "a must", is it not so?

People have to decide for themselves one way or another.  In my view food is medicine and vegetarian food is one type of medicine.  In Medicine we present the risks and benefits but patients and clients have to decide whether to take the medicine or not.  I do not feel it is any different with vegetarian foods; it is a medication prescription in my view, and in another sense a Spiritual prescription as well.

Of course many are hearing of the physical health benefits of vegetarian food.  There is ever-increasing evidence, insight and knowledge that plant based foods of any kind protect one's health in all areas of the body:  heart, lungs, arteries, the digestive system and so on to prevent diseases such as  cancer.

That goes without saying.  Yet, how many knowing this are 100 percent vegetarian in this world, knowing the health benefits?  Countless millions are living on a diet of fast food, canned food and so on for many reasons and still diet related health problems are staggering.

We are 6 billion people and growing more and more.  I feel while awareness and numbers are growing to eat vegetarian or at least partially-- my personal experience is that most people are too challenged by a 100 percent vegan or vegetarian diet at this present time in Earth history, but I feel this will change as this New Golden Age continues to evolve and grow from 2013 onward.....

Right now, many countries which eat less meat or at least in smaller proportions are adopting Western eating habits of heavy meat eating.  And in the United States, marked obesity is on the rise or still at high levels.  Even if recent studies are showing the levels of obesity are plateauing somewhat, there is still a large percent of the population dealing with difficult health issues that arise from meat and animal fat based diets.

I can discuss the Spiritual and Metaphysical reasons behind vegetarian food at some point.  Many may not be as aware of the issues surrounding the subtle, unseen aspects of meat eating.  Perhaps by knowing these aspects, some people may reconsider their eating habits to some degree.
